Of Delicate Pieces explains some of the more specific powers that spirits can learn. Meditation is one of them. Since spirits exist as projections and memories, they can focus their minds and move themselves to another location – even halfway across the world. Alex and Chase use this to travel home to Parrish.

The haziness of the world drifted in and out of focus like a watercolor painting behind the breath of life. The colors bled. Chase held her hand, and even that didn’t feel real. His touch felt like water.

“This feels like a fever,” he said. “I don’t know if we’re imagining this or if it’s real.”

“I think it’s real because it’s like what I saw when you would visit me before I died.”

“Like you’re drugged?”
