***My Personal Review***
I truly enjoyed listening to this set. I had never considered learning Italian - I am fairly fluent in Spanish and was given the opportunity to review the French set. But now I am very glad that I did because I love this language! Italian really is a beautiful language, just like the country. After reviewing 3 of their sets, I will never go with any other type of language course - they are amazing! Simple to use and even though it does take a while, there are 30 lessons in all over 16 CDs and they recommend you do 1 lesson per day which is 30 minutes. But in that 30 minutes you learn a lot. There are a lot of phrases and words and sentences thrown at you, but it is interactive so you get the chance to listen to what they say and then repeat it and listen to YOURSELF saying the words, then you hear them speak it again and you know whether you were pronouncing it correctly or not.
These sets comes in gorgeous keepsake boxes that are sturdy and about the size of a large book. They would easily fit on a shelf for students or teachers. These sets also use a lot of phonics to help you learn, which makes it easier. Especially if you have no previous knowledge of the language. I have a terrible time getting the accents correct with the French, but I found Italian to be much easier for me. Some people just have a natural ability to become fluent in any language they want. I am not one of those people, so the repetetive speaking and having the slow pronunciations is key for me to learn. I think I picked this up a little better because it does have a lot of similarities to Spanish and I am fairly fluent in Spanish. So if you have a base knowledge of Spanish at all this set will probably make it a lot easier for you to learn Italian.
With each lesson you basically get a conversation and then that conversation is broken down into words and phrases. Then you come to the interactive portion where they give you a few moments to repeat what you just learned. Then they repeat it again so you can judge if you said it right or not. Repetition is the key and it does take patience because no language is easy to learn. It all takes time and going slowly is the best way. And this set takes it slow and easy which is why I think it would be great for kids as well.
All in all this is a great set for the price - I have seen very simplistic sets for a lot more money. I would most definitely recommend purchasing any Pimsleur set to learn a new language or brush up :) I have had the French, Italian and Spanish so far to review and they are all wonderful!
