“What is that?” Ashby’s voice wavered with emerging panic.
“I don’t know,” Perry said in a bewildered breath. The horror in his voice made Ashby’s skin crawl.
In
front of them floated a black, viscous cloud, bobbing up and down like a
boat at sea. The shapeless blob was the size of a man’s torso, and it
vibrated at regular intervals, taking a different shape every few
seconds. It gurgled like a pit of hot petroleum, bubbles bursting and
leaving behind mouth-like openings. One yawned and snapped closed,
letting out a tenuous, despairing mewl.
“Did you see that?” Perry asked.
Ashby nodded. “Did you hear it?”
