***Author Interview***
What inspired you to
write your first book?
At
the age of 8 I was told I would never be a writer because I have a learning
disability called dyslexia.
But
when I had children, I found that I couldn’t look them in the eyes and tell
them they could be anything they wanted to be unless I did so myself.
That
was 6 years ago. Now I couldn’t stop writing if I tried. It’s part of my soul
and I am thankful for it everyday.
Do you have a specific
writing style?
I
do. I write in a short chapters format for kids, like myself, who struggle, or
have struggled with reading. Meeting milestones like chapter headers I believe
inspires kids to keep turning pages.
How did you come up
with the title?
My
husband and I went to a cooking school in Napa last year. After a long wine
filled day we sat down with friends and the title came to us. When I approached
my publisher with the title change she loved it. What kid doesn’t like to say
the word ARRGH! I’m 46 and it still makes me smile every time I say it.
How much of the book is
realistic?
A
lot of the tall ship sailing scenes are based on hours of research. I grew up
sailing and wanted to make sure I got them right. I also used old ships
manifests to see what the diet and daily life of a sailor on a merchant ship in
the 1790’s would be like.
If you had to choose,
which writer would you consider a mentor?
JK
Rowling
She’s
amazing and she didn’t listen to people when she was told she would never get
published either.
What book are you
reading now?
I’ve
read 111 books so far this year. Reading is a major part of being a writer. I
just started Hooks Revenge, by Heidi Schulz, last night and I could hardly
put it down. I can’t wait to pick it up later today to finish it.
What are your current
projects?
I
have 2 books slotted for release in 2015, both very different, but equally
exciting. A picture book, called Sock Monster, about what happens
when you don’t pick up your cloths, and the third book in my YA Lakeview
Academy series, Scream.

Hooks Revenge was a great book. :) I love that she writes shorter chapters, I agree that kids feel like they are getting somewhere faster with shorter chapters.
