Can one boy stand between two kingdoms at war?
Jaevid Broadfeather has grown up as a wartime
refugee, hiding from the world because of his mixed racial heritage. He feels
his future is hopeless, until a chance encounter with a wild dragon lands him
in Blybrig Academy—a place usually forbidden to anyone but the rich and royal.
But Jaevid’s case is special; no dragon has voluntarily chosen a rider in
decades, so the proud riders of Blybrig must begrudgingly let him join their
brotherhood despite his bloodline. Lieutenant Sile Derrick, a sternly tempered
man with a mysterious past, becomes his instructor and immediately takes a
peculiar interest in Jaevid’s future.
While struggling through the rigorous physical
demands of training, things begin to go awry. Jaevid witnesses the king’s
private guards kidnapping Sile in the dead of night. When none of the elder
riders are willing to help him, Jaevid begins a dangerous adventure to save his
instructor.
Everything Jaevid learned at the academy will now
be put to the ultimate test.

6. Meet Icarus
It takes a hundred
years for a dragon to grow big enough to be called a king or queen drake, but
Icarus definitely fits the bill. His scales are as black as coal, and his eyes
gleam like two red moons. At roughly twenty-three feet tall, he’s the biggest dragon
in the Maldobar, and he’s got a big attitude to match. Icarus isn’t just big
and cranky, he’s known throughout the kingdom as the strongest dragon in the
king’s forces. So it only makes sense that his rider would be the highest
ranking dragonrider in Maldobar, too.
But are the two of
them really a team? With most dragonriders treating their mounts like cattle,
it may only be a matter of time before something goes wrong. Not giving the
dragons a choice about who gets to ride them might just come back to haunt the
riders!

Excerpt:
Katty smiled at me
hopefully from across the table, leaning forward and grabbing my hand at the
wrist. “You’ll see them, too, Jae. Maybe papa would let you be his apprentice
with me.”
Mrs. Crookin smiled at
us, but I could still see it in her eyes; she didn’t think her husband would
ever allow that. They were all right with me coming to visit, and with me being friends with their
daughter, but they had to draw the line somewhere. I was still a halfbreed.

Oh no! I pasted a link into the May 11th box here, mistakenly thinking it was another giveaway's tweet box, instead of typing in the word "VISIT" for today. Hopefully I won't be disqualified if that's the winning entry, if I acknowledge the mistake here. *sighs* *hopes* Oh well, if the worst happens...I've got no one to blame but myself.
