 ***My Personal Review***

The title of this book just gives me chills - I don't know why - but it is clear from the title and cover image that when you open this book it will not be your ordinary Victorian journey.  And it isn't.  What we get is a fantastical journey into the world of steampunk which is a fairly recent genre involving bots and Victoriana and imagination.  This book is different from the beginning though because it is NOT set in Victorian England, but in France.  So that sets it apart and I love that you can read the book and actually hear the accents in your head as they are speaking.  We get a chance to meet Marguerite, a girl who seemingly has everything - she is wealthy, privileged, has her own "maid-bot", and has the absolute best of everything including clothing and education.  She is extremely smart but in the beginning we see her as this "model" of girls during that period - she conforms but wants to break free and be herself.  When I first started reading I saw her as a very shallow girl and then watched her grow into this strong and independent woman by the end of the book.  Fantastic characterization from the author as you really get to KNOW the characters and almost build a relationship with them.  Madame Pomphart is actually a hilarious character in my mind - and she reminds me a lot of the teachers in Jane Eyre.  She is mean and it is hard to figure out whether she dislikes the lifestyle Marguerite lives; Marguerite herself; or is coming from a place of jealousy.  Marguerite is fairly naive about the larger world and she decides to follow the man she believes to be the love of her life Claude into that world.  But what comes next throws Marguerite into a whole new landscape of reality, fear and ultimately becoming an adult.  The title comes into play when she leaves because she seems like the normal rich girl but underneath she is something different - and that something will allow her to face the realities of the big world she has never seen and overcome her flaws to become the lady inside.  After reading this I REALLY want an Outil maid-bot of my own :)  The whole book is filled with the backdrop of the steampunk theme - automation, bots, innovation and more.  I had to laugh at the "automated koi".  It is something that seems like a dream world, but in reality is it something we would really want?  And I guess that is part of the question that Marguerite must ask herself and find the answer to.  Very intriguing novel, and definitely a steampunk staple if you are into that genre!!!!

ABOUT LEIGH STATHAM:

Leigh Statham was raised in the wilds of rural Idaho, but found her heart in New York City. She worked as a waitress, maid, artist, math teacher, nurse, web designer, art director, thirty-foot inflatable pig and mule wrangler before she settled down in the semi-quiet role of wife, mother and writer. She resides in North Carolina with her husband, four children, five chickens and two suspected serial killer cats. If the air is cool and the sun is just coming up over the horizon, you can find her running the streets of her small town, plotting her next novel with the sort of intensity that will one day get her hit by a car.
