The Warrior and the Flower Book Tour and Audiobook Review

Welcome to my stop on the tour for The Warrior & the Flower by Camille Picott.  This is an adult high fantasy.

To celebrate Chinese New Year the tour is running Jan. 27th-31st with mostly reviews and only a few interviews and spotlight posts.  Be sure to check out the tour page with additional info and list of tour stops.

The Warrior & the Flower by Camille Picott

Yi, a retired soldier, has lost everything he loves—his wife, his daughter, and his home. He seeks refuge from his heartache by plunging into a secret mission for the World Emperor. The assignment takes him to the doorstep of a brothel, where he witnesses the madam beating a young girl. Drawn by the child’s striking resemblance to his lost daughter, Yi rushes to her defense and negotiates for her purchase—after all, how hard can it be to care for one little girl? But between the child’s inquisitive nature and the dangerous secret she carries, he gets more than he bargained for.

MY REVIEW OF THE AUDIOBOOK

Overall - 4/5 stars
Performance - 4/5 stars
Story - 4/5 stars

Would you listen to The Warrior & The Flower again? Why?
Yes I would, I loved the book and the characters! The author was able to bring everything to life with the wonderful and beautiful details. I loved the House of Flowers and how everyone was named after flowers, Tulip and Peony were great :) I loved the Oriental references and the paranormal elements that were both part of the story. Yi was an awesome character and it was heartbreaking to see what he goes through in the book. But his relationship with the Madame is great after seeing how much she is like his daughter that was murdered.

Who was your favorite character and why?
Yi the main character was absolutely my favorite. The warrior in him was very clear and yet there is also that other side that loves and can be sweet and caring. You can clearly see how much his family meant to him, especially when he takes responsibility for the girl.

Which character – as performed by Al Kessel – was your favorite?
Peony was my favorite :) I LOVED the way she was portrayed in the audiobook and she was so funny and smart yet innocent at the same time.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
When a Warrior is pushed too far, only a Flower can bring him back from the edge.

Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed listening to this book and think the author did a fantastic job of portraying the characters and bringing the story to life for the reader :) And Al Kessel did an awesome job with his voice inflections for each character. It made me laugh, made me cry and had me on the edge of my seat many times! That is exactly what a good book should be :) Definitely recommend it!

About the Author:
Camille Picott is a fifth-generation Chinese American. She writes science fiction and fantasy books with Asian characters and/or Asian settings. Camille grew up reading speculative fiction stories largely devoid of Asian characters and culture. This, coupled with a passion for her heritage, is the reason she strives to bring some aspect of Eastern myth, legend, culture, and ethnicity to all of her writings.
