RUNNING AGAINST TRAFFIC TOUR
by Gaelen VanDenbergh
I can’t think of a single time I have booked a one-way ticket anywhere, even to a place so familiar and like a second home to me as Key West. I felt as if I was taking some sort of plunge, picking up and flying away to a new life, or a new beginning, never to look back. Never to return. Of course this rush of refreshment is false, nor would I want to pick up and leave my life as I know it…But there is a hopeful thrill that accompanies starting over, rebooting, reinventing. People are very flawed, and life is fraught with troubles and emotional challenges. Every day is a new chance for them. For all of us, really. I have a tendency to write about these chances for changing direction. In some cases, as in Running Against Traffic, my characters don't have a choice in the matter.
Once the brief fantasy ended, and I booked our return flight to Philadelphia, I wondered what I would do if I were handed the opportunity to do something differently, to turn my life in another direction. What if I were handed a one-way ticket to another reality?
What would you do differently, if you could? Where would you go? If you’re one of those blissful, contented people, congratulations. I always knew you existed, and I’m happy for you. Perhaps you would take a class in Asian Fusion cooking. If, like me, this has crossed your mind once or twice, email me. I'll post the responses on my website. It's not about regrets, it's about possibilities.
